Pinal Foothill Ridge Road and Besh-Ba-Gowah Archeological Park Loop
Duration: Up to 4 Hours
Less than a mile from your start, enjoy the scenic overlook of the historic district of Globa, AZ. Known as ‘G’ Hill. Continue onto the dirt Pinal foothills road (MT-157) for a six mile route to the paved junction with Kellner Canyon Rd. Turn left and make your way to the Besh-Ba-Gowah Archeological Park and Museum for a lesson on pre-historic occupants of the area. Admission is $5 per adult. 12 years old and under free. From there you are only a few miles back to your start location in downtown Globe.
Explore Pinal Peak & Ferndell Cabin Loop
Duration: 4-8 Hours
Access Pinal Mountain from downtown and head up the Pinal foothill dirt route (MT-157). Cross through the junction and traverse the narrow winding road up the North face of the Pinal Mountain Range through Russell Gulch (FR-651). Careful of the narrow route and traffic, you will arrive at the location of the early mine camp of Sulphide del Rey - now a campground with facilities. This is a great place for a snack and the fresh smell of pine trees. Continuing on FR-651, stay left to the South side of the mountain as you climb toward Mineral Creek and incredible views as far as the eye can see! Look North again to recapture the trees as you near 6,500ft elevation and pass popular trailheads of Kellner, Ice House, and Six Shooter Canyons. At near 8,000ft you will drive through Ferndell. A group of privately permitted cabins over 100 years old and a couple small campgrounds perfect for lunch. Return the same way or explore the quiet spur of Madera Peak if time permits.
Copper Hills Exploration
Duration: 4 Hours
Rich in history, hills and minerals, visit Copper Hill. This area North of Globe is riddled with mine shafts and ruins although now mostly privately owned until you reach the Forest Service boundary. Underground tunnels traveled for miles in most every direction as turn of the century operations transported ore to the nearby Old Dominion Mine near Pinal Creek. From every route you can see old two track grades that seem to simply disappear at obscure points, but why? For what reason? An old mine? A potential mineral deposit? Or maybe just a week long thought it was a better route. Anyone alive now would not know. Cattle ranching continues in these remote areas.
The Pioneer Experience Loop
Duration: 6-8 Hours
Take a tour around Pinal Mtn and through time as you immerse yourself in the beautiful, rugged and remote territory that was a way of life for hundreds of pioneers around the turn of the century. Start this trip from our location in downtown Globe. Travel the Pinal foothills road (MT-157) that was used as part of the early mine camp access to Sulphide Del Rey. Just past this developed recreation site, stay left as you crest over the pass and then turn right onto FR-221 to Doak. The road drops immediately as you enter the Pioneer Basin and traverse the switchbacks down to the old mine camp of Doak. Mounds of sawdust once layed scattered here from the sawmill that provided early timbers used in the construction of Roosevelt Dam. You will continue along this route as you make your way toward the junction with FR-112. Turn left and continue up the old road headed for Pioneer Pass. Take a break at the Pioneer Pass Recreation Site to imagine this route as no stranger to infamous figures on the stagecoach excited to try their hand in the booming mining camp of Globe City. These stages provided payroll, mail and even prisoner transports to Florence and Yuma Territorial facilities enticing questionable characters to wait around the boulders looking for a easy pay day or to set loose a criminal comrade. Enjoy the fresh air, stop at the bridge at Sixshooter Canyon, pass the old CCC Camp toward the bottom as you make your return via Ice House Canyon Rd back to Downtown.
Historic Pioneer Pass
Duration: 2-4 Hours
Short on time? You can make it quick or take your time. Travel from historic downtown Globe up paved route Ice House Canyon Rd. to dirt FR112. Ascend between the 1880 wagon route (visible to your left) and other early wagon routes to various mine operations on the North side of Pinal Mountain, ice collection ponds and Kellner Saw Mill (to your right) as you head into and over the eastern Pinal Mountains known as Pioneer Pass. Take a break under the pine tree canopy at 6,000ft and imagine this route as no stranger to infamous figures on the stage coach line excited to try their hand in the small mining camp of Globe. This route was typical for prisoner transports to Florence and Yuma Territorial facilities and questionable characters waiting around the boulders looking for a easy pay day near Sixshooter Canyon. Enjoy the fresh air, return the same route in time to continue your day.
Visit Sulfide Del Rey Recreation Site
Duration: 4 Hours
Access Pinal Mountain from downtown and head up the Pinal foothill dirt route (MT-157). Cross through the junction and traverse the narrow winding road up the North face of the Pinal Mountain Range through Russell Gulch (FR-651). Careful of the narrow route and traffic, you will arrive at the location of the early mine camp of Sulphide del Rey - now a campground with facilities. This is a great place for a snack and the fresh smell of pine trees. You can't come this far and not continue a short way further on FR-651, stay left to the south side of the mountain for one heck of a view before turning back!
